Equipment Funding
Firefighter equipment grants: how departments fund gear, tools and safety equipment
Where fire departments find grants for firefighter equipment — PPE and turnout gear, SCBA, radios, hose and nozzles, rescue tools, thermal imaging cameras and fitness equipment — and how to build a request reviewers can fund.
Last reviewed October 24, 2026 · How we verify funding information
Most equipment a fire department buys can be funded from more than one place. The strongest requests tie each item to a documented need — its age, condition, a safety standard it no longer meets, or a gap in coverage — and show what the department is contributing itself.
Federal programs
- Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) — FEMA's Operations and Safety activity has historically covered personal protective equipment, SCBA, other equipment, training and wellness. It is competitive, peer-reviewed and requires a cost share that scales with population served. Each year's Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) sets the current priorities and rules.
- Volunteer Fire Assistance (VFA) — USDA Forest Service funds, distributed through each state's forestry agency, typically for small rural departments' wildland equipment, PPE and training, usually with a local match.
- USDA Rural Development Community Facilities — grants and low-interest loans for essential community facilities and equipment in eligible rural areas, including fire and rescue equipment. Grant eligibility depends on community population and income.
State programs
Many states run their own equipment, volunteer-assistance or firefighter-safety grants through the state fire marshal, forestry agency or a dedicated fund. Amounts, eligibility and timing vary widely. See state fire department grant programs.
Corporate, foundation and local sources
Utility foundations, community foundations, regional banks and equipment-focused foundations regularly fund specific items such as thermal imaging cameras, AEDs, extrication tools and fitness equipment, usually for departments in their service area. These awards are smaller but often faster and less competitive. See corporate and foundation grants for fire departments.
Building a fundable equipment request
- Document the need: inventory each item with its age, condition, service history and any standard it no longer meets (for example, NFPA 1851 retirement guidance for structural PPE).
- Get real quotes and keep the budget, the narrative and the quotes consistent.
- Show the benefit: who is protected, how calls or training are affected today, and what changes once the equipment is in service.
- Plan the match and the lifecycle: reviewers favor departments that show how they will maintain and eventually replace what they buy.
- Keep registrations current: federal awards require an active SAM.gov registration and Unique Entity ID.
