Facilities Funding

Fire station construction and renovation funding

How communities fund new fire stations and renovations: USDA Community Facilities loans and grants, municipal bonds and capital budgets, federal facility-modification funding, state programs and private support.

Last reviewed October 21, 2026 · How we verify funding information

New fire stations are rarely grant-funded outright. Most are paid for with long-term financing — bonds, loans or a dedicated levy — with grants and private support filling specific pieces. Planning starts years ahead.

Main funding sources for fire stations

  • Municipal and district capital budgets. General obligation or revenue bonds, capital improvement funds, and voter-approved levies or sales taxes fund most new stations.
  • USDA Rural Development Community Facilities. In eligible rural areas, USDA can finance construction, purchase or renovation of fire stations with long-term, low-interest loans, with grants available to the smallest, lowest-income communities.
  • Federal facility-modification funding. FEMA's AFG has generally funded modifications to existing facilities — for example exhaust-capture systems, sprinklers, alarm systems and backup generators — rather than new station construction. Check the current NOFO for what's eligible.
  • Congressionally directed spending and state capital programs. Some station projects are funded through state capital budgets or federal community project funding requests made through members of Congress.
  • Private support. Local foundations, businesses and capital campaigns frequently fund furnishings, equipment and named spaces.

Build a station project funders can support

  • A needs assessment: response times, call volume, coverage gaps, current station condition, code and health deficiencies (including decontamination and cancer-prevention design).
  • A realistic cost estimate and timeline, including design, land, construction escalation and furnishings.
  • A financing plan that shows how bonds, loans, grants and local funds fit together, and the operating cost of the new facility.

Capital Command keeps station needs in the same multi-year plan as apparatus and equipment, so councils see the whole picture.
